This plant-based version of a classic meal is a creative and cruelty-free twist on the traditional fried recipe. The undeniable charm of Southern cuisine surely will have everyone at the table reaching for seconds with this vegan southern style fried tofu!

For this recipe, you will need:

Ingredients

  • 3 blocks of firm tofu
  • 3/4 cup soy milk
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • 1 tsp white pepper
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1/4 cup pickle juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • Salt to taste
  • Rice paper sheets
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Tear the 3 blocks of tofu into chunks and place them in a container.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the soy milk, vinegar, 1 tsp of white pepper, 1 tbsp of garlic powder, 1 tbsp of paprika, and 1/4 cup of pickle juice to create the marinade.
  3. Pour the marinade over the tofu chunks, shake the container well to ensure the tofu is evenly coated, and let it marinate for 1 hour.
  4. In a separate bowl, prepare the flour mix by combining 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 tsp of baking powder, 2 tbsp of cornstarch, 1 tbsp of paprika, 1 tbsp of garlic powder, and salt to taste. Mix all the dry ingredients thoroughly.
  5. Wet a rice paper sheet by briefly dipping it in water. Take a piece of rice paper and wrap it around a marinated tofu chunk, creating a coating.
  6. Toss the rice paper-coated tofu chunk in the flour mix until it is evenly coated.
  7. Next, dip the coated tofu chunk back into the remaining marinade to moisten the rice paper coating.
  8. Finally, toss the tofu chunk once again in the flour mix to create a double coating.
  9. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet or frying pan over medium heat. The oil should be deep enough to cover the tofu chunks.
  10. Carefully place the coated tofu chunks into the hot oil and fry until they turn golden brown and crispy on all sides. This should take about 3-4 minutes per side.
  11. Once the tofu chunks are cooked and crispy, remove them from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
  12. Serve the “chicken” hot with your favorite dipping sauce or sides.
